The trouble with your argument is that it's not cruel and unusual, especially when you compare the method of execution to the way in which the victims died.
In the case of Echols, he will be heavily sedated and will be unconscious by the time the drugs to stop his breathing and his heart are administered. If it takes ten minutes for him to die, that's nothing compared to the pain and terror suffered by his victims.

I knew you were modding but I hadn't checked in here. Been rather busy! ; )
I really think that the DP is needed in some cases, but I am of the mind that we need to be really sure and careful in handing it out.
In this case I am kinda on the fence too so I wouldn't be comfortable handing it myself.
HOWEVER, the sanction itself is warrented in truly horrible crimes and if I ever become 100% sure of guilt in this one I will support the decision.
There are a lot of cases that I do feel warrent it Avery and John Couey being two examples.
